This New App Can Help Avoid Food Wastage

This New App Can Help Avoid Food Wastage
Wouldn't it just be great if the excess food from our homes could reach the needy instead of getting dumped in the trash can? New York based Anuj Jhunjhunwala along with his colleagues, Margaret Tung and Jason Chen, has developed a new app that can help curb food wastage and hunger by connecting consumers with excess restaurant and grocery store food at discounted prices.

The app promises to be a catalyst of change, targeting two of the most significant global problems to an end. According to the US Nature Resource Defence Council, USD 165 billion worth of food is wasted each year in the US. The app, PareUp is a unique way to increase accessibility to excess food. The soon-to-be-launched app will have an inventory of products from a participating retailer. The retailer will plug in how many excess items it has each day and will then decide on a discounted price at which they will be sold to those who'll need them. Consumers can use the app to log in and view the discounted food for the day and then go to the store to buy the food article.

The app will be free for consumers and retailers to download, however a share of one percent per sale will go to PareUp. Margaret Tung says that PareUp is not attempting to compete with food banks and nonprofits. It recognises "the logistical restraints nonprofits have" in terms of being able to pick up the food and ensuring food safety.
